ACO data FAQs
What is an Accountable Care Organization (ACO)?
An ACO is a group of doctors, hospitals and other providers that work together to coordinate care for a defined group of patients. The goal is better-coordinated care, improved patient health and fewer unnecessary costs. When an ACO meets cost and quality goals, it can share in the savings it creates.
What is the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP)?
MSSP is the Medicare program through which ACOs work to improve care while sharing in savings or, under certain models, losses. CMS currently offers two participation tracks, BASIC and ENHANCED. Intent.Health lets you filter ACOs by track and see each ACO's participation details.
What is the difference between the BASIC and ENHANCED tracks?
The BASIC track starts with lower financial risk and can move to higher risk over time. The ENHANCED track is the highest-risk option, where the ACO shares both savings and losses with Medicare in exchange for a larger share of savings.
What do BASIC track Levels A to E mean?
The levels show how much financial risk an ACO takes on. CMS describes Levels A and B as one-sided models, where the ACO can share in savings but not losses. Levels C, D and E are two-sided models, where the ACO can share in savings and also in losses.
What is the difference between a high revenue and a low revenue ACO?
CMS classifies ACOs based on the revenue of their participants relative to the Medicare spending of their assigned beneficiaries. High revenue ACOs often include hospitals, while low revenue ACOs are often physician-led. You can filter ACOs by this classification.
What is the SNF 3-Day Rule Waiver?
It allows eligible Medicare beneficiaries assigned to the ACO to receive certain covered skilled nursing facility services without the usual requirement of a three-day inpatient hospital stay first. Each ACO profile shows whether the waiver applies.
What is the difference between prospective and retrospective assignment?
Assignment determines which Medicare beneficiaries are attributed to an ACO. Under prospective assignment, beneficiaries are assigned at the start of the year. Under retrospective assignment, the final list is determined after the year ends based on where beneficiaries received care. The ACO profile shows the assignment arrangement where available.
Can I find ACOs by the states they serve?
Yes. Besides state, city, ZIP code and radius filters, the Service Area (States) filter finds ACOs based on the U.S. states where they provide services, which can differ from where the ACO is headquartered.
Can I find ACOs that recently raised funding?
Yes. Financial filters include employees, annual revenue, total funding, latest funding amount and latest funding type, such as Private Equity or Series A. Use Last Raised From and Last Raised To to find ACOs whose most recent funding falls within a date range.
Do intent signals mean an ACO is ready to buy?
No. Organization Intent shows topics, products or solutions an ACO has been researching. It is a useful reason to investigate, but it does not confirm a purchase, budget or timeline.
Intent.Health helps healthcare businesses research and engage the U.S. healthcare market. It connects 30 organization intelligence modules, including Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), with Executive Intelligence, HCP Intelligence, Decision Network, intent signals, propensity analysis and Ishi contextual AI.
