Questions teams ask
GPO data FAQs
What is a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO)?
A GPO helps healthcare organizations buy products and services together. By combining the purchasing volume of many members, a GPO negotiates prices and other terms with suppliers for items such as medical supplies, equipment, drugs and services.
How do GPOs make money?
GPOs are typically funded by administrative fees paid by suppliers based on purchases made through GPO contracts. Some GPOs also share part of those fees with their members. Arrangements vary by GPO and contract.
Do hospitals have to buy through a GPO?
No. Members generally choose which GPO contracts to use, and many also buy outside them. Some contracts include commitment or compliance levels that reward members for concentrating purchases. A GPO relationship is a strong signal of purchasing context, but it does not tell you every buying decision a member makes.
Why should suppliers research GPOs?
Being on a GPO contract can open access to many member facilities at once. Understanding which IDNs, hospitals and other organizations are connected to a GPO helps you see the potential reach of a contract and which members to engage directly.
What types of GPOs can I filter by?
GPO Type includes Health Systems GPOs, long-term care (LTC) GPOs, National/Regional GPOs, PBM-led GPOs and Medication Contracting Organizations, Pharmacy/Oncology GPOs and Physician GPOs.
Can I see which organizations are connected to a GPO?
Yes. Network Relationships filters find GPOs with affiliated IDNs, hospitals, nursing homes, home health, hospice, outpatient sites or group practices. In each profile, the Decision Network lists connected organizations by category, with their location and the number of associated executives and HCPs.
Who should I contact at a GPO?
That depends on your offering. Executive Departments show how many executives a GPO has in functions such as Operations, Finance, Information Technology and Sales, and you can open individual executive profiles. Contracting and category decisions often involve several roles, so treat titles as a starting point for qualification.
What financial information is available for GPOs?
You can filter GPOs by employees, annual revenue, total funding, latest funding amount and latest funding type. The Financial Overview shows group revenue, total funding, latest funding received and when the organization last raised funding, where available.
What can GPO intent signals tell me?
Intent signals show topics a GPO has been researching, such as value-based care, healthcare technology or medical supplies. They can suggest current priorities, but they do not confirm an active sourcing event or contract award.
What is the GPO ID?
The GPO ID is Intent.Health's unique identifier for each GPO. You can use it in the Identifier section to find a specific GPO quickly and consistently.
